On Humility

In November 2012 Gene Smithson, a Systema instructor from Austin was seriously wounded in a shooting accident. Gene underwent a few surgeries, his recovery is steady but the process is very long. Gene has been openly sharing his tragic experience and ways he has been coping with Systema family. Here is update number 4, dated February 2013.

“My name is Gene. I was shot up pretty good a couple of months ago and now, I have become a walker.
I walked before of course but not like now.
Over the past weeks, I have been trying to recover and to prepare my body and mind for one more surgery in my treatment plan. Walking has easily been the featured exercise in my recovery and preparation for that last big hurdle.

Here is the update on Gene’s health and progress.
Over 3 weeks have passed since the tragic accident when Gene Smithson, a Systema instructor from Austin TX, was shot, air lifted to the hospital and had multiple surgeries. Gene is now discharged at home and healing slowly.
He has lost 30 pounds and is facing many challenges both physically and financially. Nevertheless, Gene perseveres in his efforts. He is now able to take walks and every day gets a little further down the street. For the first time since the accident, he took a short drive in the car. […]
